Democratic Political System in Indonesia

Since being born as an independent country on August 17, 1945, Indonesia has determined to adhere to democratic ideals and teachings in the life of the state. The concept of democracy adopted by the Indonesian state does not only apply to the social or legal fields but also in the political sector, which is then called the democratic political system.
Definition of a Democratic Political System
In Indonesia, the citizens/people have a big share and role in the administration of the political system. This role concerns the development of formal political institutions in Indonesia, both those operating at the regional/local and central levels.
A democratic political system is a political system that provides equal treatment to all group members (in this case people in government institutions) both the majority and minority groups, in terms of their respective rights and abilities to participate in government administration.
Characteristics of a Democratic Political System
The existence of democracy in the political system of a country means that the country pays attention to and treats equally all existing groups regardless of the majority or minority in the political field. So that the political world of the country is spared from dictators (usually from the majority group) who use their positions and powers arbitrarily.
Principles of a Democratic Political System
The application and implementation of democratic ideology in the political system require limitations that will keep the political system democratic. Apart from that, principles are also needed to guide the implementation of a democratic political system. In general, a democratic political system has 10 characteristics, namely as follows:
there is a change in the political mechanism, namely between the political life of the government and the political life of the community
there is oversight of state administration
judiciary or law that is free and does not take sides with one party/group
there is the protection of basic human rights or what is called human rights
regulations or policies imposed by the government are made by a political representative body and without coercion or threats from other government agencies
elected government officials are placed in positions and departments according to their abilities, this placement uses a concept called merit system and poly system.
if there is a dispute in a political institution, it will be resolved by peaceful means, not compromise
the guarantee of individual freedom, but still accompanied by certain limits (such as press freedom)
application and implementation of a democratic constitution
consent is an important principle in a democratic political system, especially in making decisions concerning the public interest.
Democratic Political System Mechanism
In its implementation, the mechanism of a democratic political system has components that affect the atmosphere of the country’s political life. The components of the mechanism include:
Political Superstructure (The Governmental Political Spere): government institutions or state equipment
Political Infrastructure (The Social-Political Spere): social institutions
The political superstructure and political infrastructure both play a role in the administration of the government system, namely in the formulation of government policies and the formulation of laws. As well as political infrastructure that refers to social institutions also plays a role in directly overseeing the administration of government, namely as a government supervisory agency.
