Rituals, traditions, and symbols bond people to their culture and can stimulate nationwide delight. Folklore consists of stories about a nation’s leaders and heroes; usually embellished, these tales highlight the character traits that are fascinating in a nation’s citizens. Although the definition of political culture emphasizes unifying, collective understandings, in reality, cultures are multidimensional and infrequently in battle. When subcultural groups compete for societal assets, such as entry to government funding for applications that can benefit them, cultural cleavages and clashes may result. As we will see within the section on multiculturalism, conflict between competing subcultures is an ever-present truth of American life.
