In political science, democratic socialism and social democracy are largely seen as synonyms and as overlapping or otherwise not being mutually unique while they are distinguished in journalistic use, in some circumstances sharply. While social democrats proceed to name and describe themselves as democratic socialists or simply socialists, the that means of democratic socialism and social democracy successfully reversed. Democratic socialism initially represented socialism achieved by democratic means and often resulted in reformism whereas social democracy included both reformist and revolutionary wings. With the affiliation of social democracy as coverage regime and the event of the Third Way, social democracy became nearly solely associated with reformism whereas democratic socialism came to incorporate communist and revolutionary tendencies.
