The dying of Prime Minister Lyons in April 1939 produced unrest within the conservative events. Country Party leader, Earle Page, became Prime Minister for 19 days, followed by Robert Menzies as head of a UAP Government for 11 months, after which as chief of a Coalition Government until the 1940 election. In the election, the Coalition events gained only 33 seats, and Menzies remained Prime Minister with the assist of two independents.
